Standing here at 440 Albert Street at the YMCA Power of Trades
Development Centre brings back a powerful wave of emotion.
Not long ago, I arrived in Ottawa from Delhi, India, carrying a
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, a Master’s in Renewable Energy and
a dream to build a meaningful career. But like many newcomers, I lacked local
context. Walking into this building on my first day, sitting in a classroom for
the first time in years, I had no guarantees—only hope.
That hope found a solid foundation in the Power of Trades: Home Builders Training Program.
This program did far more than translate my technical knowledge
into the Canadian context. It provided hands-on training in green building
practices while connecting us with industry guest speakers who provide
valuable guidance. Beyond the hard skills, it rebuilt my confidence.
It taught us how to communicate effectively, collaborate as a team and navigate
the intricacies of the Canadian workplace.
Just as importantly, the YMCA of the National Capital Region
provided an invaluable bridge into Canadian civic life. Coming from abroad,
learning about workers' rights, workplace health and safety, and the dignity of
labour was profound. We learned that safety is not just a site requirement—it
is a fundamental right in a free, democratic society where every worker is
empowered to speak up for their well-being without fear.
That transformative journey led directly to my role today as an
Energy Conservation Advisor at Hydro Ottawa. Every day, I help residents across
our city reduce their energy costs and embrace sustainability by accessing
energy-efficient equipment. Investing in energy-efficient trades does not just
build houses—it builds people, strengthens our climate resilience and
reinforces the dignity of the workforce.
That is why I’m sharing my personal story today.
Thank you to the YMCA of the National Capital Region for
changing the course of my life and investing in programs that unlock the
extraordinary potential of future workers.
