The Pre-Apprenticeship Home Renovation Training Program provides individuals with the hands-on skills training required to find employment in the residential renovation and construction trades, including carpentry, drywall finishing and plastering, tile setting, and painting. There is no cost to participate.
What you'll learn
The program delivers hands-on technical training in residential renovation and construction. Core training content covers:
- Exterior sheathing
- Framing
- Installation of subfloor, windows, doors, trim, and siding
Program highlights
In addition to technical training, the program includes a range of supports and opportunities:
- Job search and pre-employment assistance
- 8 to 12 weeks of paid work placement with local employers
- Technical, academic, and pre-employment preparation
- Textbooks, toolkits, and safety equipment provided at no cost
- Opportunity to earn Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) credits
What you'll gain

- First Aid & CPR-C
- WHMIS
- Working at Heights
- Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps
Format and duration
The program consists of 12 weeks of technical training delivered on a full-time basis, followed by 8 to 12 weeks of paid work placement with local employers.
Who it's for
To be eligible, participants must:
- Be a minimum of 16 years old (those under 18 require an OSSD or equivalent)
- Be a Canadian Citizen, Permanent Resident, or Convention Refugee with a valid open work permit
- Be legally entitled to work in Canada with a Social Insurance Number (SIN)
- Be an Ontario resident
- Be English proficient (Canadian Language Benchmark Level 5 or higher)
- Be committed to full-time attendance for 12 weeks and to field work afterward
