Participant Success Story — From Computer Science to Site Assistant

“Thank you so much for your kind words and support. I truly appreciate it, and it's been a pleasure being part of both the YMCA Power of Trades Program and the Home Renovation Program.

Even though I have a computer science background, my interest in construction grew after I started working with Canaan Developers, my first construction company. As a site store manager, I learned a lot about civil, mechanical, and electrical engineering simply by being around the projects daily.

I had opportunities to learn new things, supervise tradespeople, communicate closely with them, ask questions, and gain valuable experience from their expertise. I even worked alongside them on various projects, including seven-level basement parking structures with twenty-seven-floor luxury apartment buildings, and multiple luxury townhouse projects.

Working on these projects solidified my decision to pursue construction. The YMCA Power of Trades Program and the YMCA Home Renovation Program helped me move closer to that dream. The Power of Trades Program boosted my confidence, while the Home Renovation Program provided me with hands-on experience and practical skills that further enhanced my growth. I got a job at a big construction company, and I am now working as a Site Assistant. I love this place and the people, and I look forward to growing more in the construction field!”
